National Day of Writing

October 20, 2009

This past Saturday, October 17, 2009, Edwards Air Force Base hosted an open air show free to the public.   The last time the base hosted such an event was back in 2006.  There air show received a crowd of more than 90,000 people.  I was part of the base security personnel, assisting the Air Force’s Security Forces.  My company provided 40 personnel from Bakersfield, California.  And the United States Marine Corps Provide 10 personnel also to assist with base security.  My group got tasked to provide traffic control and directing traffic at the dry lake, where the 90 percent of the public was parked at.  From 0630 in the morning to 0800 at night we were out in the parking lot maintaing order, and controlling the flow of traffic.  As well, we assisted with heath casualties, lost children, vehicle breakdowns, and dealt with crowd control.  For 22 of the 40 personnel, this was our first time directing traffic and dealing with a record crowd.  Our time started at 0230 in the morning and we were released at 0900pm.  Previous to that must of the 40 personnel from my company had less than 4 hours of sleep.  We were preparing the day before and running through scenarios.  With lack of sleep, enduring the heat of the desert, my groupl did not complain once.  The Military Police Corps train us to be proffesinals and putting the mission first.  As Military Policeman I think we represented the Army and the other military branches well.

Nowtopia on Global warming

October 15, 2009

In the chapter “Free Fuel: The Tinkerer’s Grail” in Nowtopia, Chris Carlsson states that biofuel activist have been ”…tapping into a small network of tinkerers scattered around the country,  a grassroots movement began using biofuels, from various blends of biodiesel to recycled waste vegetable oil” (Carlsson/161).  Dating back to 1973-74 oil crisis, scientist throughout the U.S have been finding new ways to use waste vegetable oil as an alternative to gasoline.  We have been dependent of cars for transportation and we have been intrigued with fixing up cars.  Naturally cars have been a bastion for doing yourself.  We have found that biofuel works and is much better for environment.  Even college students and biofuel activist have been displaying that biofuel works.  Biofuel activist have driven across the U.S and even crossing international borders.  Elementary Schools have been using school buses that run on waste vegetable oil.  Lyle Estill express the use of biofuel:

Biodiesel is great fun.  It’s empowering.  Nothing feels better than tooling down the highway with the knowledge that you are free.  Free of the Saudis,  Free of the whole sorry lot… vegetable oil [is] here now.  It works.  It’s renewable.  It’s sustainable.  It smells good.  It creates jobs in the United States.  And there is no war required to get it.  (Carlsson/157)

The use of biofuel is great alternative to use instead of gasoline to improve the environment.

Take Action: Tell the U.S. it’s Time to Act on Climate Change

More than any other country, action taken by the United States to limit greenhouse gases and build a clean energy economy is needed to achieve a sustainable solution to our global climate crisis.

This December world leaders will gather in Copenhagen to negotiate a global response to climate change. As a world leader in greenhouse gas pollution as well as clean energy technology, the United States needs to take bold action by implementing comprehensive clean energy policies to curb emissions.

Nobel Peace Prize Winner and President Barack Obama has said that climate change is an urgent threat, and now is the time for him to lead the United States in confronting the climate crisis.

This is a chance for people around the world and in the United States to join together in telling President Obama that we want him to lead the United States in taking bold and significant action to reduce greenhouse gasses.

Time is running out, and our planet can’t afford to wait.
